Course Info for ENV216 - Hazwoper/Hazmat

HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response) is at the intersection of three Federal regulatory agencies (EPA, OSHA, DOT) and includes several career fields (science, technology, engineering, medicine, toxicology, law, psychology, organizational management, loss prevention, QA/QC, construction, waste management, etc.).The purpose of this course is to ensure awareness and promote safety among employees who may be exposed to chemical hazards in the work-site. This course meets the mandated OSHA requirementsfor the classroom training portion of personnel engaged in hazardous waste operations as outlined in 29 CFR 1910.120.This certification is a job requirement for many entry-level positions in the area of environmental consulting.

As the result of instructional activities, students will be able to:

  1. Define hazardous waste, labeling requirements, storage areas, disposal facilities, and protocols for hazardous waste determination.
  2. Explain CFRrelated to removal of hazardous waste.
  3. Understand and explain the applicable laws and regulations of the Occupational Safety and the Environmental Protection Agency for hazardous materials, operations and emergency response plans (HAZWOPER).
    1. Define and explain OSHA requirements for training of personnel engaged in hazardous waste operations as outlined in 29 CFR 1910.120, including removal or handling of underground tanks and/or piping, contaminated soil and/or groundwater, subsurface investigations, construction work in which hazardous materials may potentially be present, encountered, prepared, packaged, labeled, marked, stored, shipped for disposal, or any facility wherein hazardous wastes are treated, stored, or disposed.
    2. Understand and explain the applicable laws and regulations of the EPA as it pertains to hazardous waste operations and handling.
  4. Understand and explain the applicable laws and regulations of the DOT as it pertains to hazardous waste operations and handling.
  5. Understand and demonstrate the procedures necessary to eliminate the potential hazards and/or losses of hazardous waste.
  6. Understand the procedures necessary to protect the health and safety of workers, the public, and the environment in various situations of exposure to hazardous waste.

  1. Hazardous waste; labeling requirements, storage areas, disposal facilities, and protocols for hazardous waste determination etc.
  2. Code of Federal Regulations related to removal of hazardous waste.
  3. Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) laws and regulations for hazardous materials, operations and emergency response plans.
  4. Operations as outlined in 29 CFR 1910.120 for removal or handling of underground tanks and/or piping, contaminated soil and/or groundwater, subsurface investigations, constructionwork in which hazardous materials may potentially be present, encountered, prepared, packaged, labeled, marked, stored, shipped for disposal, or any facility wherein hazardous wastes are treated, stored, or disposed.
  5. Understand and explain the applicable laws and regulations of the Department of Transportation (DOT) as they pertain to hazardous waste operations and handling.
  6. Understand and demonstrate the procedures necessary to eliminate the potential hazards and/or losses of hazardous waste.
  7. Understand the procedures necessary to protect the health and safety of workers, the public, and the environment in various situations of exposure to hazardous waste
